A new grants scheme has been launched in South Tyneside to help local communities celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in style.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has become the first British monarch to mark 70 years on the throne.

South Tyneside will be joining communities across the globe to mark the Platinum Jubilee over the extended four-day bank holiday weekend running 2-5 June.

As well as hosting an exciting programme of events, the Council has also set aside a £30,000 Community Grant Fund to support wider jubilee events and community projects being organised across the Borough.

Councillor Joan Atkinson, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, said: "We know South Tyneside communities will want to take part in the national and local events and activities as the UK comes together to celebrate The Queen's long reign and remarkable dedication to public service.

"We are delighted to be able to set up a dedicated grants scheme for local people and organisations wanting to host their own celebratory events and activities that bring local communities together.

"The Queen's Platinum Jubilee is such a momentous occasion for our country. We feel that everybody should be given the chance to create special memories and enjoy local tributes that will remind us of the lasting legacy of Her Majesty The Queen in generations to come."

The Council is working with Inspire South Tyneside to administer the funding to established groups and organisations - including schools, care homes and housing plus/supported living accommodation - for celebratory community events taking place between 30 May to 12 June.

The funding can support things like street parties, hospitality or one-off hire costs for facilities such as marquees or stage hire.

Funding can also be used for longer term projects, such as a community garden, memorial or artwork. Activities that engage disadvantaged groups over an extended period of time, such as Jubilee-themed learning or arts and crafts can also be included.

Applications are now open, with grants of up to £500 available for a community project or a maximum £10 per head for an event.

Grants will be considered on a first come first served basis with all funding allocated by the closing date of 31 May.

In the run up to the Queen's Platinum Jubilee weekend, South Tyneside schools, community groups and libraries will be hosting a range of activities and crafts.

During the platinum jubilee weekend, on 2 June, the Borough will join towns and cities across the country to light more than 1,500 beacons. Local communities will also be encouraged to get involved in Big Lunch events in their local parks on 5 June.

More details will be announced on these initiatives in due course.

The Council is also supporting the Queen's Green Canopy initiative with the planting of 70 new trees well underway.
