Notice of Submission of South Tyneside Local Plan to the Secretary of State for Housing Communities and Local Government
Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 The Town and Country Planning (Local Development) (England) Regulations 2012.
Notice is hereby given, in accordance with Regulation 22 of the Town and Country Planning (Local Planning) (England) Regulations 2012, that South Tyneside Council submitted the South Tyneside Local Plan (2023 - 2040) to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government on 11 March 2025 for independent examination.
On 4th March 2025, The Secretary of State for the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) intervened in the South Tyneside Local Plan. Under section 27 of the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act, the Council was directed to submit the Publication draft South Tyneside Local Plan (2023 -2040) for Examination in Public by 12th March 2025.
The Council has, therefore, submitted the Publication draft South Tyneside Local Plan (2023- 2040) in accordance with the Secretary of State's direction.
The local plan submission documents, supporting documents and evidence can be viewed on the Council's Local Plan Examination webpage at: https://www.southtyneside.gov.uk/localplanexamination
The following submission documents can be viewed at council offices:
- South Tyneside Publication draft Local Plan 2023 - 2040 (January 2024)
- South Tyneside Local Plan Publication draft Policies Map (January 2024)
- South Tyneside Local Plan Publication draft Sustainability Appraisal Report and appendices (2024)
- Initial report to inform the Habitats Regulations Assessment of the South Tyneside Publication draft Local Plan (Regulation 19) (2024)
These documents will be available to view:
- between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday at Town Hall & Civic Offices, Westoe Road, South Shields, NE33 2RL.
- between 10am and 3pm, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Jarrow Town Hall, Grange Road, Jarrow, NE32 3LE.
This is not a complete list of evidence which underpins the Local Plan. Please see the council's Local Plan examination web page for details of supporting documents.
Furthermore, the council will make any other relevant documents (the examination library) available for inspection at Council Offices (by arrangement) and at the examination hearings.
The South Tyneside Local Plan will now be subject to an independent examination conducted by a planning inspector appointed by the Secretary of State. This is a continuous process running from the date of submission through to receipt of the appointed planning inspector's report. Once confirmed, details relating to the examination process will be advertised, made available online and sent to all respondents.
To assist the planning inspector through the examination, an independent programme officer has been appointed. The programme officer works on behalf of the inspector to organise and manage the administrative and procedural matters of the examination and will be responsible for any communication with respondents during the examination. The programme officer will contact representors with information on the examination process.
