Alcohol profile

Alcohol related mortality

This indicator release shows the rate per 100,000 who have died from alcohol related conditions for all ages in 2023.

  • South Tyneside had a rate of 66.5 per 100,000.
  • This remains to be significantly higher than the national rate which was 40.7 per 100,000 in 2023.
  • The trend shows no significant change.

Admission episodes for alcohol specific conditions

This indicator release shows the rate per 100,000 for those who were admitted to hospital where the primary or secondary diagnoses are an alcohol specific condition in 2023 / 24.

  • In South Tyneside there was a rate of 1,310 per 100,000.
  • This remains to be significantly higher than the national rate which was 612 per 100,000.
  • The trend shows no significant change.

Obesity profile

Percentage of physically active children and young people

This indicator release shows the percentage of physically active children and young people (aged 5-16) in 2023 / 24.

  • In South Tyneside 48.8% of children and young people aged 5 to 16 were physically active.
  • This is not significantly different from the national percentage which was 47.8%.
  • The trend shows no significant change.

Suicide Prevention profile

Suicide rate (Male & Female, 10+ years)

This indicator release shows the mortality rate per 100,000 from suicide for males and females (aged 10+) in the three-year period 2021 to 23.

  • For males the rate was 13.0 per 100,000. This is not significantly different to the national rate for males which was 16.4 per 100,000.
  • For females the rate was 4.7 per 100,000. This is not significantly different to the national rate for females which was 5.4 per 100,000.
  • There has been no significant variation in the rates for males and females over time.

Wider Determinants of Health profile

Violent crime - violent offences per 1,000 population

This indicator release shows the rate of violent offences per 1,000 population in 2023 / 24.

  • In South Tyneside there was a rate of 39.9 violent offences per 1,000.
  • This is not significantly different to the national rate which was 32.7 per 1,000.
  • This has been an increasing trend since 2012 / 13.

Domestic abuse related incidents and crimes

This indicator release shows the rate of domestic abuse related incidents and crimes per 1,000 population for 2023 / 24. Note that local authority data for this indicator is allocated based on the rate of the police force data which they sit in.

  • In South Tyneside there was a rate of 38.4 domestic abuse related incidents and crimes per 1,000.
  • Nationally the rate was 27.1 per 1,000.
  • Domestic abuse related incidents and crimes have been increasing overall in South Tyneside since 2015 / 16.

Deaths from drug misuse (Male and Female)

This indicator release shows the rate of mortality from drug misuse per 100,000 population for both males and females in the year period 2021 to 23.

  • For males the rate was 14.2 per 100,000. This is significantly higher than the national rate of 8.0 per 100,000.
  • For males, the last three data points indicate a decreasing trend.
  • For females the rate was 5.2 per 100,000. This is not significantly different to the national rate of 3.1 per 100,000.
  • Due to lack of data, a trendline cannot be calculated for the female variation of this indicator.

Other releases of note

  • Fingertips has recently been updated with national data showing the percentage of 15 year olds who have ever used e-cigarettes and who regularly used e-cigarettes.
  • The percentage of those who have used e-cigarettes is 41.9%.
  • The percentage of those who regularly used e-cigarettes is 10.9%.
  • Note that this data is not released regularly and therefore time-series trends do not exist for these indicators.
