Car Park to Close to Allow Next Stage of Regeneration

A town centre car park will close permanently next week to allow for further progress on a £100m regeneration masterplan.

Mile End Road car park, in South Shields, will be closed on Friday 18 September to make way for the new Job Centre.

Signs will be in place diverting people to car parks in nearby North Street and Salem Street. There are more than 900 spaces in the town centre.

The new purpose-built DWP building is being relocated from Barrington Street, as part of the South Shields 365 regeneration masterplan, being delivered by South Tyneside Council and Muse Developments.

Site investigation works will get underway once the car park is closed, ahead of construction of the 12,000sq ft facility beginning later this year.

The current Job Centre premises are earmarked for demolition to free up land and bring forward Phase Three of South Shields 365 - bringing new purpose to the town centre, including an enhanced food and drink and leisure offer.

As part of this phase, a new multi-storey car park is planned for Oyston Street.
