South Tyneside Hosts Community Flu Clinics

A number of community flu clinics are being held across South Tyneside for residents at higher risk of developing severe seasonal flu and therefore eligible for a free flu vaccine.

Having the flu jab is the most effective way to avoid catching and spreading the disease. The annual vaccine works by boosting antibodies, helping the body to fight off the virus, and it is free for people who are at increased risk from the effects of flu.

A flu clinic for those entitled to a free flu jab will be held at Primrose Community Centre in the Bede Room on Monday 2 November between 2pm and 5pm. Call 0191 424 7773 to make an appointment.

Bilton Hall in Low Simonside is hosting a flu clinic on Tuesday 3 November between 11am and 2pm (call 0191 424 7773 for an appointment) while the meeting room in Monkton Hall is the venue for a clinic on Wednesday 4 November between 1pm and 4pm. Call 0191 2831904 for an appointment.

A further flu clinic is also being held at Westoe Rugby Club on Thursday 5 November between 10am and 1pm. Call 0191 2831904 to make an appointment.

While anyone can catch the flu, it can be very serious for certain groups of people. Getting the flu jab helps to protect the most vulnerable, including those aged over 65, pregnant women and children and adults with an underlying condition and people with weakened immune systems. People with learning disabilities as well as carers of an elderly or disabled person are also eligible.

Deputy Leader with responsibility for Independence and Wellbeing, Councillor Tracey Dixon, said: "Flu is a highly infectious disease with symptoms that come on very quickly. The most common symptoms of flu are fever, chills, headache, extreme tiredness and aches and pains in the joints and muscles. For some people flu can be a very serious illness, leading to a stay in hospital or even death.

"With COVID-19 still very much at large across the Borough, it is vitally important that people take advantage of the free flu vaccine to keep themselves, their loved ones and their community safe."

She added: "Having the vaccine will also help to reduce pressure on the NHS and social care staff. Anyone entitled to a free flu jab who can't make one of the clinics can make an appointment at their local GP practice or pharmacy."
