Overview

The South Tyneside MOT programme is designed to help you manage your finances, skills, and health so you can prepare for the future.

The programme is available to South Tyneside Council employees only. 

You can customise your MOT to fit your needs, creating a unique package just for you.

You can choose from options including:

  • health checks
  • financial wellbeing
  • home energy advice
  • planning for retirement
  • emotional resilience

All sessions are virtual, and can be booked using a work or personal email address. 

If you want to attend a session during work hours, you need to get approval from your manager. 

Health checks can be set up at any location within South Tyneside.

Health checks

You can access health checks in the workplace.

There will be a trained practitioner there to carry our the checks. 

There are two health checks available, including the NHS Health Check and Health MOT.

What you will talk about in the session will depend on which check you are eligible for. 

Checks may include:

  • measuring your height, weight and/or waist
  • blood pressure test 
  • asking general health questions on topics such as smoking, alcohol and physical activity

NHS Health Check

The NHS Health Check will tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Stroke

You are eligible for an NHS Health Check if you can answer yes to all the statements below:

  • I am a South Tyneside resident
  • I am between the age of 40 to 74
  • I do not have any of the following pre-existing conditions:
    • Heart disease
    • Chronic kidney disease
    • Diabetes
    • High blood pressure
    • Transient ischaemic attack
    • Atrial fibrillation
    • Inherited high cholesterol
    • Heart failure
    • Peripheral arterial disease
    • Stroke
    • Currently being prescribed statins to lower cholesterol
    • Previous checks have found that you have a 20% or higher risk of getting cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years

If you answered yes to all of the statements above, you are eligible for a full NHS Health Check.

An appointment can last up to 30 minutes.

If you answered no to any of the above statements, you are only eligible for a Health MOT.

A Health MOT appointment can last up to 15 minutes.

Financial wellbeing

From managing debt to improving your credit score, we are putting on sessions where you can discover 4 key steps and strategies to strengthen your financial wellbeing.

Whether you're planning for the short or medium term, this course covers it all.

During the session, you will learn how to:

  • understand your income and plan your spending
  • review and keep track of your borrowing
  • plan your financial goals and prepare for those unexpected costs
  • start planning for life beyond work whenever that may be

Home energy advice

Support is available to help you reduce your energy bills and create a warmer home.

If you struggle to heat your home because of money worries, or because your home is in a rural area, poorly insulated or off-gas, we're here to help with free, expert advice.

What in on offer:

  • simple, clear advice on how to reduce your energy bills
  • a free personalised property report including recommendations for energy saving home improvements
  • in depth advice from an energy expert about the best options for you and what to do next
  • help and guidance on applying for grants to help with up-front installation costs
  • links to certified local installers who can do the work for you
  • ongoing support to help you every step of the way

Planning for retirement

We're putting on sessions that will help you plan for retirement and help make informed decisions.

We recommend attending this session if your retirement is up to 10 years away.

During the session, you'll learn how to:

  • plan for the lifestyle changes ahead
  • maximise the benefits of your state and workplace pensions
  • make the most of your tax-free cash
  • understand the income options available from your pension
  • achieve your retirement goals

Emotional resilience

We want to help people understand their current levels of resilience and also give you some tools to maintain and improve your own emotional resilience.

During the session, you will:

  • explore the connection between emotional health and resilience
  • assess your resilience levels
  • understand resilience
  • recognise the indicators of stress and identify sources of support
  • identify practical steps to build resilience
