The Mayor of South Tyneside has put her thanks on record to volunteers across South Tyneside whose efforts make the Borough such an outstanding place in which to live.

The first citizen of the Borough, Councillor Pat Hay, has recorded a special video to officially open Volunteers' Week which runs until 7 June.

"The past year has really highlighted the fantastic work our volunteers do in our communities," said the Mayor.

"Local groups and organisations have really stepped up to the plate throughout the pandemic and the spirit of South Tyneside has never been stronger. I feel an enormous sense of pride to represent a Borough where people truly care and look out for each other."

Inspire, the third sector and local voluntary sector umbrella organisation, provides information, advice and support with the aim of improving the capacity and sustainability of the third sector in South Tyneside. It develops and promotes opportunities to encourage more people to get involved in volunteering.

Councillor Moira Smith, Lead Member for the Voluntary Sector, Partnerships and Co-operative, said, "As a co-operative council, we are committed to working with our communities to deliver transformational change.

"We have achieved so much in South Tyneside both before and throughout the pandemic and this has only been possible thanks to the sterling efforts of our volunteers."
