Course aims

  • This session uses Sandstories as a unique, visual way of exploring the key elements of child-centred practice when working with resistant and/or neglectful families
  • The session provides essential, up-to-date messages from practice, research and Child Safeguarding Practice Reviews

Course learning outcomes

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Work effectively with 'resistant' families
  • Recognise and challenge 'disguised compliance'
  • Wrestle with the decision "how long should we keep trying with this family"
  • Recognise the impact of fear and stress (including domestic violence) on the survival and resilience of infants
  • Recognise the role of child development knowledge and attachment theory in child-centred practice and insightful assessment
  • Understand and embed the lessons from serious case reviews and other case review processes (including those using 'systems' methodology)
  • Strengthen the resilience and 'wisdom' of the workforce through reflective practice
