A student has put South Tyneside on the map - literally.

Young People's Parliament (YPP) member Rachael Mienie has illustrated a map showcasing all the fantastic places for young people to visit in the Borough.

The idea came about as part of the YPP's campaign on health and wellbeing which revealed that young people were not aware of the services available to them.

Rachael said: "Students suggested that it would be a great idea to have all the information in one place.

"We wanted the information provided to be accessible and visually engaging for young people so we came up with the idea of an illustrated map of South Tyneside. This signposts young people to a digital map containing all service information to support their health and wellbeing as well as places to visit. Alongside this we have developed further promotional materials, incorporating photographs young people have taken in and around South Tyneside."

A copy of the map has been sent to every secondary school in the Borough and copies will also be available at other venues, such as leisure centres and other public spaces.

Councillor Adam Ellison, Lead Member for Children, Young People and Families, said: "It is absolutely vital that our young people know how and where to access support to support their health and wellbeing.

"Furthermore, the Borough boasts some incredibly beautiful assts from our stunning coastline to our beautiful green spaces which all play a key role in boosting mood."

Councillor Anne Hetherington, Lead Member for Adults, Health and Independence, added: "One of our key ambitions is to keep people well and healthy throughout their lives so I'm grateful to Rachael and the Young People's Parliament for their work in making sure our young people know how to access support when they need it."
