Overview

South Tyneside has benefited from a series of traffic light upgrades on major bus routes across the region. 

Funded by the region's Transforming Cities Fund programme, £1.8 million has been invested in modernising and connecting traffic lights across the borough.

Aims of the project

Overall, the work aimed to: 

  • prioritise buses at key junctions to help improve bus reliability and journey times
  • reduce congestion affecting public transport
  • improve air quality
  • help to encourage people out of their cars and on to public transport

What improvements have been made

Across South Tyneside, 29 junctions which are controlled by traffic lights have been upgraded or renewed.

They are located along the following main bus routes: 

  • Newcastle to South Shields
  • Sunderland to South Shields
  • John Reid Road, South Shields
  • A184 through Boldon

Timescales

This project was completed in May 2024.

The work is part of a wider project to improve bus journey times across the North East.

We're working with our neighbouring local councils on this initiative, which has received a total investment of nearly £20million from the Transforming Cities Fund.
