Bulky waste collections

Overview

If you have unwanted items that are too big or heavy to put in your bin, and you can't take them to the Recycling Village, we can collect them from your home.

Bulky waste collections are only available for domestic properties - not businesses.

We can collect bulky items that you would normally take with you if you moved house, such as:

  • Furniture (beds, freestanding wardrobes, sofas)
  • White goods (fridges, freezers, washing machines)
  • Electrical equipment (computers, hi-fis)

Place the items for collection on your property where you normally place your waste bins to be emptied. Crews cannot enter your property, garage or shed.

Some soft furnishings may contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), these must be separated from your other bulky waste items. For more information on items with POPs, see managing waste with POPs.

Items we cannot collect

We can only collect items that you would usually take with you when you move house.

Examples of items we cannot collect include:

  • doors
  • kitchen units
  • bathroom suites
  • laminate flooring
  • glass doors from wardrobes
  • items over 2 metres (6ft) long

For these items, please see House and garden clearances.

We also cannot collect items that could risk the health and safety of our employees. This includes items that are:

  • too heavy / dangerous to lift
  • wet through (so please do not leave items outside for a long time before your collection)
  • contaminated in some way and could be hazardous (so please do not leave items outside for a long time before your collection)

How collections work

  • Put your items out on your collection day by 7.30am. We will collect your items between 7.30am and 5pm
  • When leaving household items out for collection please make sure they are stored safely and securely as not to expose others to harm especially young children. South Tyneside Council does not accept any liability for any items stored or left in a public area prior to collection.
  • Do not place items out long before 7.30am as this may cause an obstruction and items may also get wet through meaning that we may not be able to take the items away
  • Items should be placed within the boundary of your property, as close as possible to the entrance, making sure they are not causing a hazard by blocking the public highway. Also please make sure any gates are unlocked on the day of collection.
  • Do not overfill bags
  • Items longer than 2 metres (6ft) may not be collected, so please cut up carpet into manageable lengths
  • If you are putting your items in a back lane, please put your house number on the back door or wall
  • Stack all items tidily in the same area.
  • The collection team will only remove the items stated on your request form

The information in the above checklist is intended as a general guide.

How we dispose of items

We will remove your old, unwanted items and recycle or dispose of them in an environmentally-friendly way that meets all legal requirements.

Other ways to dispose of large items

You can drop-off bulky items for free at the Recycling Village (tip).
