Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs)

Overview
Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) give local councils and the police additional powers and greater flexibility to tackle anti-social behaviour in certain areas.
They have been designed to help deal with persistent anti-social behaviour which is having a harmful effect on the quality of life of people in the area.
PSPOs were introduced under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Current PSPOs
These PSPOs are currently in place in South Tyneside:
- Using mechanically propelled vehicles on public land
- Drinking alcohol in public spaces
- Taking psychoactive substances in public spaces
- Anti-social behaviour and fishing (South Shields riverside)
- Fishing at night (South Shields riverside)
- Dog fouling and dog control
Penalties
If you ignore a PSPO, you are committing an offence and could be fined.
The fine (or 'Fixed Penalty Notice') is £100, or £50 if paid within 7 days.
PSPOs can be enforced by the Police, Police Community Support Officers and any authorised officer of the Council.
