Overview of the proposal

The proposal includes:

  • Removal of transferability of parking tickets between the town centre and foreshore
  • Removal of Mile End Road Car Park
  • Amendment town Centre car parks to Mondays to Sundays inclusive
  • Amendments to period for which pay and display ticket has been purchased
  • Removal of parking spaces on William Street, South Shields

South Tyneside Council (General Amendments in relation to variation of parking charges) Order 2024

South Tyneside Council proposes to make an Order under Sections 1, 2, 32, 35 and Schedule 9 to, the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers.

The effect of the Order will be to amend South Tyneside Council (Foreshore and Off Street Parking Places)(Consolidation) Order 2024 as follows:

  • To remove the transferability of parking tickets between Town Centre Car Parks and Foreshore Car Parks.
  • A parking ticket issued by a ticket machine at any South Tyneside Council Town Centre Car Park (apart from Claypath Lane Car Park and Winchester Street Car Park between the times of 8.00am and 5.00pm Mondays to Fridays inclusive) may be used in any South Tyneside Council Town Centre Car Park up to the level of payment made.
  • A parking ticket issued by a ticket machine at any South Tyneside Council Foreshore Car Park may be used in any South Tyneside Council Foreshore Car Park up to the level of payment made.
  • Removal of Mile End Road Car Park from the Town Centre Schedule of Car Parks as it is no longer there.
  • Amend the days of operation of charges for parking place in relation to Charlotte Street North Car Park, Charlotte Street South Car Park, Charlotte Street West Car Park, Interchange Car Park, North Street Car Park, Oyston Street Car Park, Salem Street Car Park and Thomas Street Car Park to Mondays to Sundays inclusive.

The Order will also amend the South Tyneside Council (Parking Places)(Consolidation) Order 2024 as follows:-

  • Pay and display 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday on Sea Road, South Shields, the northeast side from a point 209 metres southeast of its junction with Beach Road in a south eastwards direction for a distance of 79 metres will be amended to Sea Road North, South Shields and the period of parking will be amended to include no return same day.
  • Pay and display 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday on Sea Road, South Shields, the northeast side from a point 376 metres southeast of its junction with Beach Road in a south eastwards direction for a distance of 81 metres will be amended to Sea Road South, South Shields and the period of parking will be amended to include no return same day.
  • Pay and display 8am to 5pm Monday to Sunday on Beach Road, South Shields the north side from a point 40 metres east of its junction with Fowler Street to a point 19 metres west of its junction with Anderson Street will be amended to Beach Road West, South Shields.
  • Pay and display 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday on Beach Road, South Shields the northwest side from a point 30 metres southwest of its junction with Sea Road in a south westwards direction for a distance of 35 metres will be amended to Beach Road East, South Shields.
  • Pay and display 8am to 8pm Monday to Sunday on Beach Road, South Shields the northwest side from a point 85 metres southwest of its junction with Sea Road in a south westwards direction for a distance of 120 metres will be amended to Beach Road East, South Shields.
  • Pay and display 8am to 5pm Monday to Sunday period of parking to be amended to include no return same day on:
    • East Street, South Shields the south side from a point 1 metre east of the east kerb of East Street for a distance of 30 metres;
    • Mile End Road, South Shields west side from a point 8 metres north of its junction with Queen Street for a distance of 50 metres;
    • Salem Street, South Shields the north side from a point 15 metres east of its junction with River Drive east for a distance of 54 metres;
    • Stanhope Street, South Shields south side from a point 2 metres west of its junction with Brigham Place to a point 5 metres east of its junction with Mile End Road;
    • Beach Road, South Shields the north side from a point 40 metres east of its junction with Fowler Street to a point 19 metres west of its junction with Anderson Street; and
    • Lawe Road, South Shields east side from a point 19 metres north of its junction with Ocean Road/Sea Road in a northerly direction for a distance of 91 metres.

The Order will also amend the South Tyneside Council (Parking Places)(Consolidation) Order 2024 as follows:-

  • Pay and display 8am to 5pm Monday to Sunday William Street, South Shields east side from a point 30 metres north of the north kerbline of Thomas Street northwards for a distance of 11 metres to be deleted in its entirety.
  • Pay and display 8am to 5pm Monday to Sunday William Street, South Shields east side from a point 4 metres north of the north kerbline of Thomas Street northwards for a distance of 9.5 metres to be deleted in its entirety.

Full details of these proposals are contained in the draft order which, together with a statement of the Council's reasons for proposing to make the Order, may be inspected from Monday to Friday during normal office hours at the Town Hall at the address below.
